Standardizing Transition-to-Practice for Internationally Educated Nurses in the U.S. Healthcare System

The Society of Internationally Educated Nurses and Nursing Allies (SIENNA) is pleased to introduce its new White Paper, “Standardizing Transition-to-Practice for Internationally Educated Nurses in the U.S. Healthcare System,” featuring the Preparation-Integration-Transition-Consolidation-Heightening (PITCH) IEN TTP Model™.

The transition of Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) into U.S. healthcare systems is a complex process shaped by clinical, professional, and cultural adaptation, as well as the conditions of the practice environment. With Transition-to-Practice (TTP) programs varying across organizations, there is a need for structured, standardized, and coordinated support.

The PITCH IEN TTP Model™ introduces a competency-based framework that guides IEN progression from preparation through long-term professional development. The model emphasizes flexible, competency-driven advancement supported by mentorship, preceptorship, and organizational readiness.

Findings underscore that successful integration depends on coordinated organizational strategies, supportive practice environments, and sustained investment in professional development. The PITCH IEN TTP Model™ provides a practical framework to strengthen workforce integration, retention, and overall healthcare system capacity.
